Install extension

The extension is installed on the child's computer from the Chrome Web Store. Works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, and other Chromium browsers.

⬇ Open in Chrome Web Store

Step by step

1
Open Chrome Web Store β€” YouTube Mentor in the browser where the child uses YouTube.
2
Click "Add to Chrome" and confirm with "Add extension".
3
A welcome page opens. If you have a pairing code (from parent/teacher), enter it. If not, see "No code".
4
Press "Pair". Once paired, the dashboard activates for this child.
Brave & similar browsers: If the welcome window cannot be closed by the button, simply close the tab via the Γ— on its header. Wait for the green "Paired" badge.
2

Pair with dashboard

What is a pairing code

A 6-digit code (e.g. A4B7K2) generated in the dashboard when adding a child. The code is valid for 1 hour. After pairing, the extension keeps a long-lived token and the code is no longer needed.

Pairing flow

1
Parent/teacher in the dashboard mentor.vinarice.net/dashboard clicks + Add child.
2
Dashboard shows a 6-digit pairing code. The parent sends it to the child (SMS, chat, paper).
3
The child enters the code in the welcome screen and presses Pair.
4
Child appears as ● active in the dashboard.
3

No pairing code β€” what to do

Are you a parent or teacher who wants to get a code for this child? Click directly:

Sign up free β†’ Log in β†’

After signing in, in the dashboard click "+ Add child" and you'll receive a pairing code to enter in the extension on this child's PC.

πŸ’‘ Tip: If you're currently on the child's PC and want to manage the account from your own computer, sign up here, hand the code to the child, and later log in on your own PC β€” everything stays synced.

Other ways to get a code

πŸ…° From a parent

If YouTube Mentor is part of family supervision, ask your parent. They'll generate the code in the dashboard via "+ Add child" or, for an existing child, "Re-pair".

πŸ…± From a teacher / school

If the extension is deployed in a classroom, get the code from your teacher. Teachers have their own school dashboard with all students.

4

Three modes β€” Standard / Learning / Silent

When adding a child, pick one of three modes. They differ in how visible the extension is in YouTube.

🟒 Standard (recommended)

A small bar appears below every video saying "I have a parent's extension". The child knows about the extension β€” transparent, builds trust. Best choice for most families.

🟑 Learning

A larger active bar with lessons and quizzes. Suitable for a learning-focused mode where the child actively engages.

πŸ”΅ Silent

No visible elements in YouTube. The child doesn't need to know the extension is running. You see activity only in the dashboard.

Ethical note: Use Silent mode thoughtfully. For younger children (under 12), Standard with transparent communication is often more effective β€” builds trust and reduces motivation to circumvent. Silent is typically reserved for older teens in critical situations or audit use in schools.
5

How to use the dashboard (parent)

The dashboard has 7 main tabs:

  • Overview β€” today/week time, top channels, stats
  • Children β€” list of children, add/edit, get pairing codes
  • Channels β€” whitelist (allowed) and blacklist (blocked) YouTube channels
  • Lessons β€” short educational lessons to send the child
  • Push β€” send a specific video to the child
  • Plan β€” Free / Family / Lifetime
  • Settings β€” password, email, GDPR export

Child detail

Click a child name in "Children" β†’ detail with tabs:

  • Overview β€” hourly chart, top videos, top channels
  • History β€” chronological list of watched videos
  • Channels β€” subscribed channels (from Google account) + filters
  • Lessons β€” scheduled lessons for the child
  • Filters β€” hide Shorts, recommendations, comments; enforce Restricted Mode

How the extension looks for the child

Standard mode

A thin bar appears at the bottom of the YouTube window with monitoring info. Click opens a small popup with watch history and minutes today.

Learning mode

Like Standard, but taller bar with the current educational lesson/quiz. The child can tap to answer and earn points.

Silent mode

No visual elements. Extension runs in the background and sends data to the dashboard.

Browser toolbar icon

Clicking the red M icon opens a small popup with quick stats (today's time, top channel) and buttons Open dashboard and Disconnect.

7

Channel block & whitelist

Blacklist (blocked channels)

In Channels, add a channel URL (e.g. youtube.com/@somechannel). Videos from that channel won't load β€” replaced by "This channel was blocked by your parent".

Whitelist (allowed channels)

With active whitelist, the child only sees channels on the list. Everything else is hidden. Suitable for younger children or schools.

Shorts whitelist

Special setting: Shorts only appear from whitelisted channels. Works even without a global whitelist.

Changes propagate to the extension within 60 seconds. For immediate sync, click "Sync now" in the dashboard.
8

Lessons & video push

Educational lessons

In Lessons, create a short lesson (question + answer choices). In Learning mode, the child sees it directly in the YouTube bar. Correct answer = points.

Push video

In Push, send the child a specific YouTube video. Options:

  • Queue β€” video appears as the next recommendation
  • Suggestion overlay β€” video overlay on the currently playing one
  • Open tab β€” opens video in a new tab immediately

Troubleshooting

Extension doesn't activate after install
Restart Chrome (close all windows and reopen). If still broken, open chrome://extensions, find YouTube Mentor, click "Remove" and install again.
Pairing code says "invalid"
Code is valid 1 hour. If expired, parent in dashboard clicks the child β†’ "Re-pair" to get a new one.
In Brave/Vivaldi the welcome window won't close
Close the tab via the Γ— on its header. Or restart the browser β€” extension activates automatically. Known: Brave 1.50+ doesn't allow extensions to close their own tabs via API.
Stats don't appear in dashboard
Data syncs every 30 seconds. If nothing after an hour, check chrome://extensions that it's "Enabled" and click "Refresh" in dashboard.
Child can disable / remove the extension
Standard Chrome doesn't let parents lock extension removal. Use Family Link or school MDM to enforce. The dashboard will show "disconnected" and you can generate a new pairing code.
When was the child last on YouTube?
In child detail you see "Last seen: HH:MM" β€” time of the last event from extension. If "never", no activity yet.

FAQ

Works in browsers other than Chrome?
Yes, any Chromium browser (Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi). Firefox and Safari β€” not yet, separate version planned.
Do you share data with Google or 3rd parties?
No. Data stays on our EU servers (Czech Republic). No Google Analytics, no 3rd party cloud. Details in Privacy Policy.
How is this different from Family Link?
Family Link blocks apps and counts time. YouTube Mentor shows WHAT exactly the child sees (videos, channels) and lets you act (lessons, push, channel block). You can use both.
How many children can I track?
Free = 1 child. Family = up to 4 children + sibling sharing. Lifetime = unlimited + future features. See Pricing.
Can YT Mentor be used in schools?
Yes, school tier with teacher features (groups, class lessons, audit). Contact schools@vinarice.net.
GDPR data export?
Yes. Dashboard β†’ Settings β†’ GDPR Export. JSON with all child data. Account deletion = full erasure within 24 hours.
